Then you go online and contact an "agent." He sounds confident. He sends you a long voice note. He quotes you ₦1.5 million, ₦2 million, sometimes ₦3 million. He promises Canada in 3 months. You don't have the money. So you start borrowing. You start selling things.

Or maybe you already paid one of them. And he ghosted you. Or he gave you a fake CAQ letter. Or he kept "processing" your file for 14 months while feeding you stories.

"Maybe Canada is not for people like me. Maybe I should just manage Nigeria."

You tried IELTS. The exam fee alone almost killed you. And when the result came… you didn't make the band. ₦300k gone. Just like that.

Insecurity is shouting outside. Fuel is ₦1,200. Light is 4 hours a day if you are lucky. Your wife or your husband is looking at you, hoping you have a plan. And you are smiling outside, but inside, you are tired.

The few Nigerians who know this method don't talk about it. They go silent. They land in Canada. They send "I don tey for Canada" tweet. And they move on.

Hi, my name is Daniel J.A. I'm from Lagos State. And until 18 months ago, I was exactly where you are.

Let me start from the beginning. Because if I don't, you won't understand how deep this rabbit hole was for me.

My japa madness started in late 2022.

I had just lost my job at a logistics company in Ikeja. The owner said "the economy is bad" — that same phrase we hear every week in Nigeria. I had just gotten married. Rent was due. My wife, Joy, had just told me she was pregnant.

"How will I feed a baby in this country?"

That was the question that started everything.

The next morning I called my Uncle Tony in Festac. He's the "successful" one in the family — his sister-in-law is in Brampton. He told me something I will never forget:

"Daniel, my boy, listen to me. The day you stop paying somebody else to dream for you, is the day your dream go start working. Canada no dey hide. The information dey for road. Go find am yourself."

1. The first agent — "Brother Femi" from Ogba. He charged me ₦450,000 for a "study visa pathway." He showed me screenshots, told me about a "school in Manitoba." I borrowed money from my wife's sister. Three months later, his line was switched off. His Lekki office was a barbershop.

2. IELTS. I registered with the British Council. ₦315,000 just to sit the exam. I read for 6 weeks. I went in confident. My result: Band 5.0. I needed 6.5. The shame of telling my wife that result… I cannot describe it.

3. Saving up the "agent money." I went back to driving Bolt + small POS business. I planned to save ₦2 million in 8 months. Month 5: my dad had a stroke. The entire savings — ₦1.1 million — went into Lagos hospital bills. Back to zero.

4. The "second agent" — a woman in Surulere with a fine office. She quoted me ₦1.5 million for a Canada work permit through her "employer connect." I told her I only had ₦400k. She said "pay deposit, balance when offer letter comes." I paid the ₦400k. The "offer letter" she sent me 2 months later was a Photoshop job. The company didn't even exist. I searched LinkedIn — nothing.

5. Caregiver agencies on Facebook. I tried 3 of them. One asked me to first pay ₦180k for "documentation." The other two never replied after I sent my CV. The last one was running a Ponzi scheme using japa as cover.

By the end of 2024, I had lost roughly ₦2.3 million to agents and exams. I was in debt to 4 different people. My wife had stopped asking about Canada. We just didn't talk about it anymore. That silence was worse than the fights.

Then came the night that changed everything.

It was a Tuesday. Around 1:47 AM. I couldn't sleep. I opened Facebook just to scroll. And in a group called "Nigerians In Canada — Real Talk," I saw a post by a guy named Emeka.

He wrote: "Stop paying these agents. Everything they are selling you, the Canadian government dey give for free. I came here with ₦0 to an agent. Inbox me if you want truth."

He spent the next 2 hours walking me through it on a screen-share. The exact portal. The exact way Canadian employers search for African candidates. The exact CV format (totally different from the Nigerian CV format we all use). The exact words to put in your cover letter. The work permit pathway after you get the offer. Everything.

I didn't believe at first. Because it was stupidly simple.
